MILKY POISON! The Southern Toad is one of three large toad species in Florida. Look at her eyes! This is most likely a female because the males are generally smaller than the females, and this toad was massive. The kidney bean-shaped parotoid glands on the side of the neck contain a white, milky fluid that irritates mucosal membranes such as the eyes mouth or nose. It’s not a toxin that can injure humans but you don’t want your dog to eat one. Even though this mild irritant is not deadly like the infamous invasive Cane Toad, it can still cause the skin to turn red and swell. This milky toxic resin can easily be washed off your hands with a little soap and water. This beautiful Southern Toad I found hopping across the road in the middle of night and I stopped to take this photo, she was quite mobile so the moment was over before it started. This species is native, and doing quite well in its environment which is exciting.
